A study has revealed that, women are more inclined to have sex if they think it will help them lose weight, rather than hit the gym. According to the research, around 76 per cent of women are more inclined to weave the nocturnal workout into their routines if they think they will burn calories.

Navratri special: Reasons why people fast during this time

New Delhi: Fasting during Navratri doesn't always have a religious meaning. There are many who observe nine-day fast for religious reasons, but others, especially youngsters, do so to abstain from oily food and detoxify their bodies. But experts warn that extreme starvation can play havoc with your system.
Twenty-four-year-old Nitin Mohan is not a religious person, yet he is observing the fast and is restricting his diet to liquids and fruits. The main reason for this is to get his abs in shape.
"My family observes the fast and I also do so. But I am doing so to get rid of the flab around my tummy. Hence outside binging is cut down a lot during these days," said Mohan.
"I am on strict liquid and fruit diet. Also, I will be doing cardio and ab-crunches to get better results," he added.
Noida-based fitness trainer Aamit says his young clients are fasting and asking him for quick results.
"Some of my clients confess that fasting is just a way to detoxify their bodies. But the main aim for most of them is to drop some kilos. They suddenly want you to focus on their problem areas like abs and thighs because they are consuming lesser calories than before," Aamit said.
So far so good. But Mumbai-based clinical wellness specialist Namita Jain says one shouldn't adopt extreme methods as this can lead to adverse results.
"I know a lot many people who observe the fast just to lose weight. But don't misinterpret the word detoxification. It doesn't mean starving or stripping off nutrients from your body. People literally starve aimlessly during these days and as soon as the fast is over, they binge on food like never before and the end result is you pile on double weight," Jain said.
"A real detoxification process involves drinking a lot of liquid to flush out toxins from your system. Eating light food that is easily digestible, eating frequently, sipping herbal teas and coconut water and doing a few breathing exercises is what detoxification is all about," she explained.
During the fast, people are either completely off food, or they gorge on "Navratra special" fried stuff and snacks and unknowingly consume double the number of calories than they would on a regular day.
"If you are having a big bowl of chips as your lunch, then you are playing with your system. It is not going to do any good to your body as chips are very fattening and loaded with cholesterol," nutrition consultant Geetu Amarnani pointed out.
"One has to watch what one is eating during the fast. You can't just keep on eating fasting snacks and potato chips all the time. They are laden with calories - much more than your daily normal intake of food.
So, one shouldn't just blindly eat (these special snacks) just because one is fasting," she added.

This posture helps us relieve stress and improves blood circulation. The blood reaches the brain faster, which is good for our eyes.

Know why pandits don't apply kumkum on married women’s forehead?

Applying kumkum or sandalwood paste on the forehead after every puja is considered necessary. But, some pandits apply it on men’s forehead and on women’s bangles.
According to our scriptures, Brahmins should apply tilak on married women’s bangles and not on her forehead. The reason behind this is because no man other than the woman’s husband should touch her.
In Hindu scriptures, it is believed that the touch of another man can ruin that woman’s pativrat (devotion for her husband). A married woman cannot be touched by any other man. Only in case she is not well, a doctor can touch her.
It is also believed that applying tilak on the bangles (which is also a sign of married women) increases the life of her husband. Hence, applying kumkum on the bangle helps her preserve her pativrat along with keeping the tradition of applying tilak after puja.

London: People who get up early in the morning are likely to be happier, healthier and slimmer than those who do not, says a study.

The researchers from London's Roehampton University have found those who watch more TV are more likely to skip breakfast. It could be since they snack in the evening when watching TV, making them less hungry when they wake up in the morning, the Daily Express reported.

In the study, experts quizzed 1,068 adults to see if they were morning or evening people. They found that morning people tend to be happier, thinner and more conscientious than evening people. They are also more likely to eat breakfast.

Joerg Huber, the researcher, said, "These findings bear out the consensus that there are morning people and evening people, and that morning people tend to be healthier and happier, as well as having lower body mass indices."

Meet the tinseltown's spiritual advisers

Showbiz has always had its share of spiritual seekers and practitioners. Even among the current generation there are those who perhaps because of the insecurity built into the business or even because of the uncertainties of life in general seek something that heals and soothes feathers ruffled in the rough and tumble of life.

Dilshad Pastakia, personal hairstylist to actor Shah Rukh Khan and to a couple of other Bollywood actors, says, “I have worked with ill people and I realise that disease is something that we create for ourselves with our thoughts. When the mind, body and soul are in harmony there should be no disease. Yet people have various issues in their lives starting from their childhood and I help them to re-look at their basic beliefs even if they are subconscious. The journey is always an inward one and though some people feel that’s a tough path to take, it’s easier than the outward journey into the real world. What’s more is that it’s also much more rewarding. It can rid people of their hidden fears and anxieties and help them achieve happiness.”

Shiamak Davar, choreographer and dance educator, trained for spirituality under his mentor the late Khorshed Bhavnagri, the author of ‘Laws of the Spirit World’. He carries on Khorshed’s legacy of helping people contact the spirit worlds through the medium of automatic writing bedsides bringing them into contact with universal spiritual principles.

Says Shiamak, “One has to really work for what one wants and then have the trust (in a Higher Force) that it will happen if it’s good for your life. You have to know your natural gifts and talents, work within your limitations and work out who you are basically.” He adds, “When I look around me and see so many people and how they’re suffering I’m truly grateful to God for all that I’ve been given.”

Pushtii Shakti, actor and sanyasin, like Dilshad, believes in the force of thoughts to create our realities. An Osho believer, she incorporates spiritual techniques from various spiritual schools to relieve people of their anxieties and traumas.

While she herself follows Osho’s concept of ‘dynamic meditation’ she uses everything from tarot and angel card readings to being a spiritual channel to advise people on their life questions. She tells about a new technique she’s learnt — rebirthing and breath work — that’s proving immensely valuable in her quest. “It involves teaching people to breathe right according to a particular pattern which they then adapt according to their own capabilities.”

It also helps her decipher the subconscious of the seeker and to help expiate them of their painful life experiences. It has helped produce real life results in the wondrous improvement in eyesight of her uncle who was nearly sight-impaired.

Actor and tarot reader Munisha Khatwani, discovered her gift soon after recovering from a near fatal car accident when she was drawn to the spiritual world, reveals, “For me spirituality is anything that brings me peace of mind and a sense of my own life. It could be meditation, exercise, doing a tarot reading, anything that brings me inner calm.” While advising others she is however careful to let them sort out their issues on their own.

Actress Tisca Chopra was one of the television world’s early converts to New Age Buddhism 13 years ago and has since then helped many other television stars enter the world of Buddhist philosophy. She says, “Self mastery is the goal of all spiritual activity. As a Buddhist I believe in the ultimate law of the Universe — that of the simultaneity of Cause and Effect. One becomes mindful of one’s causes in thought, word and deed.

And by changing these one can get completely different results in the world we live in.” She adds, “I used to be an introverted and confused person who had ambitions but no way of achieving them. Strong Buddhist practice made me sure of myself and the ability to write my own destiny. I see that I have deeper relationships than before..”

Art of Living (AOL) instructor Rhea Pillai has been propagating Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s philosophy for over a decade now. Teaching others in her environment, whether in showbiz or outside about the values of the spiritual life, Rhea says, “In our present age, while materialistic pursuits are important, the gentler aspects of life are being overlooked. I’d say we need a balance between commercialism and the humanitarian aspects of life. And we need to start by being grateful for what we have received in our lives.

There’s a procedure in our AOL courses called Bowing Down where we also thank our parents, our ancestors and even the sun for its life-sustaining light. It links up to really looking around you and seeing that one has so much more than what others around one have — no matter how well or badly off you are. The fact is that more gratitude one shows, the greater are the blessings one receives from life’s natural forces,” she says.

Yoga effective in treating psychiatric disorders

New Delhi: Yoga, whose all-round benefits are increasingly being accepted across the world, has now been found useful in treating mental and psychiatric disorders, a number of scientific studies have found.

"Some believe that yoga should be used only for prevention and health promotion and not as a therapy for illnesses," said B.N. Gangadhar, who heads the psychiatry department at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) here.

"The reality is that it is being increasingly used as a method for treating various disorders, either alone or as in addition to other therapies, including psychiatric ones," Gangadhar, also director, Advanced Centre for Yoga at NIMHANS, told reporters.

A study co-authored by Gangadhar and three associates examined the effect of yoga as a therapy supplementing medical treatment of schizophrenia, a severe mental condition, which registers failure rates as high as 50 to 60 percent. The condition is ranked as the ninth leading cause of mental disability worldwide.

Roughly half of 61 schizophrenia patients were randomly assigned to yoga therapy and the other half to physical exercise for four months. Ten from each group had dropped out during the therapy.

The yoga therapy group showed significantly greater improvement in mental or behavioural disorders than those in the physical exercise group. The yoga group also performed better in social and occupational functioning.

Some of the symptoms of schizophrenia are hallucinations (hearing voices), delusions (often bizarre) and disorganized thinking and speech, which render the patient's life chaotic and distressful.

Another study led by Gangadhar found that Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY) significantly lowered stress by bringing down high plasma cortisol levels among patients, which indicate stress or illness. SKY is a method of breath control pioneered by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's Art of Living Foundation.

Similarly, M. Javanbakht, a psychiatrist at Iran's Islamic Azad University, and others found yoga eased mental conditions such as depression and anxiety in women.

Participants in Iran were assigned to two groups: one that went through two yoga sessions of 90 minutes each every week for two months and another which did not do any yoga. Women in the yoga group registered a significant decrease in anxiety and depression levels.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), which includes yoga, is now being increasingly used for easing anxiety, stress and depression. Some studies suggest that the percentage of patients availing themselves of CAM could be as high as 60 percent, said Gangadhar.

"A functional brain imaging study at NIMHANS demonstrated that chanting of Aum deactivated certain brain areas bearing on our emotions, particular anger and fear, (and producing a calming effect)," said psychiatry associate professor Shivarama Varambally.

"This indicates that Aum chanting may help in emotional control and reduce negative emotions," Varambally added.

Johns Hopkins University's Arthritis Centre reports that scientific studies on the effect of yoga on rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are "promising," with results showing "some improvement in joint health, physical functioning, and mental/ emotional well-being."

The centre suggests that such studies show yoga is a "safe and effective" way to increase muscle strength and improve flexibility, areas of core interests to arthritis sufferers. Besides, yoga can increase mental energy and help a patient develop positive feelings and help keep negative feelings in check.

Yoga, derived from a Sanskrit word meaning 'yoke,' is designed to integrate one's body, mind and soul so that the entire system functions harmoniously.

"Many might argue that such a time-tested practice does not require any proof, but contemporary medicine can accept yoga only after thorough validation through scientific tests," Gangadhar concluded.

Chanakya Niti: Key to happy life

It is true that nobody can change the past. But, some people keep thinking about what happened in the past and end up ruining their present and future.
According to Acharya Chanakya, a person who is always worried about whatever happened in the past can never be happy. One should learn from their past and move ahead in life.
He says, every person should make sure that he doesn’t repeat the mistakes committed in the past. Staying upset about something that happened will not serve any purpose.
Similarly, people should not get upset about some predictions that may happen in future.
Chanakya says, predicting future is impossible and there are high chances that the prophesies may prove false. Hence, a man should not worry about the past or the future and live in the present. Following this principle will keep a man happy throughout his life.
